PERSONALITY: Shin is a very easygoing, friendly boy. Drifting from place to place and person to person, he's at home in chaotic circumstances.

There's something about him that makes him seem a little lost. It tends to set off maternal instincts (no doubt this is one of the things his clients find appealing about him). This isn't entirely a wrong impression. Unlike most teenagers, who affect a kindof above-it-all coolness, Shin really has seen a lot and really is rather jaded. On the other hand, he has moments of childishness, such as literally jumping for joy if you buy him sushi. He can also be remarkably lazy about things he isn't passionate about (that being almost everything that's not punk, music, sushi or Reira).

To those who know Shin well, he's a complete brat. He borrows without asking, eats your food and passes out on your couch after mercilessly beating you at majong. And he knows he can get away with it because he's cute. To those who don't know him, he's a charming, honest boy. It's not that he's intentionally trying to deceive strangers. He's just developed a sophisticated, semi-conscious mental calculus of how much he can get away with with his friends. Yet being his friend's not all bad. He's a loyal personality and will stick up for the people he's close to no matter what (for instance when he throws a drink in the face of a member of one of his favorite bands for hurting Hachi).

Shin's tomcat ways make him wary of romantic relationships. He's had clients profess love for him before, something he finds both embarrassing and uncomfortable, seeing as he can't return their feelings. It's not that he's incapable of them (as Reira in the series shows) but he will take some convincing, like a stray cat you gradually coax into your house. On the other hand, he ends up counseling his friends on their own relationship troubles quite a bit. Despite how bubbly and attention-seeking he is, he's also a good listener.

Ryoko's "education" has given him weird, skewed ideas about sex. Put simply, he's a bit of a gold digger he ain't messing with no broke OL. He has difficulty separating the process of gaining something from sex, mainly because noone has taught him any better. Although he's quite good at it, he views it as something rather mundane. He won't do it for free with someone unless business has been unusually slow or he feels a real connection to them. These psychosexual hangups are not, however, unfixable. With a caring lover or a good therapist, he may mature.

He's passionate about music, with a tendency to fanboy over bands he likes. It is for this reason that he feels a connection to England, birthplace of punk, above and beyond it being his childhood home.

Shin's politics tend towards the kind of lazy, undeveloped anarchism common in much punk rock. He really has no idea about the term's political origins, knowing only that there is The System and it is a Bad Thing and in general to be rebellious. No doubt this will leave him vulnerable to the Brotherhood Of Mutants' propagandizing.

In fact, his education has been woefully deficient period, and only Yasu's forcing him to cram allowed him to succesfully fake being a real sophomore. He's also uneducated about many quintessentially Japanese things. For instance he doesn't know what one does on Tanabata or how to use chopsticks.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Shin has the ability to generate, manipulate and hear sounds at very low frequencies, from the lower end of conventional human hearing on downward. These sounds can be transmitted several miles (in the manner of elephants), used to disrupt delicate equipment, or make subconscious suggestions in the ears of others.

AU HISTORY: Shin was born in England, to a Japanese father and a Swedish mother. The youngest of several boys, his mother died in childbirth, a fact for which the rest of the family has never forgiven him. He didn't experience much warmth growing up, probably the reason for his searching after affection as a teenage. Despite that, he never became a sullen and withdrawn child, always striving his best to make friends. This was part good nature and part survival strategy: if his family hated him, it was only logical to find people he could rely on elsewhere. At age eleven, his powers began to manifest, though it took some time for anyone to realize it as everyone thought they were simply a particularly elusive nearby high powered sound system.

Shin was promptly disowned. His father was a respectable businessman and having a mutant for a son was not on. He did not like the idea of being a ward of the state. Fortunately he still had one option: Preteen Shin sought refuge with a family friend, a flight attendant named Ryoko. She gave him a generalized education in punk rock and (presumably after he matured a bit) "bad things". His opportunities in England where limited though. When he was judged ready, she shipped him off to Japan, to make his fortune there (she'd accumulated a small fortune in frequent flyer miles over the course of her career).

At fifteen, Shin found himself in Tokyo, bumming around and staying with his string of girlfriends. He knew he wanted to make it big as a musician and become the first (publicly known) mutant rocker. When he saw a flyer for a punk band looking for auditions in the window an antique shop, he lept at the chance. Despite his youth, he impressed everyone at the audition (and caused Hachi's maternal instincts to go into overdrive) and became BLAST's new bassist. The lead singer, a spunky girl named Nana made him promise to become a better bass player than his idol, Ren Honjo. Not knowing that Ren was Nana's ex, he agreed enthusiastically. BLAST became his new surrogate family, even the prickly Nana O.

Playing a series of gigs around Tokyo, the band soon acquired the notice of Gaia records, who offered them a contract which, plied with sushi, Shin was the first to sign. He was looking forward to having a 'legit' way of making money instead of being a gigolo.

There was a problem though: legally, Gaia couldn't sign a juvenile delinquent mutant. The band was in a bind and Shin was considering quitting for everyone else's sake. Nana refused that idea, had Yasu give him a month long crash course in the most important school subjects he'd missed and sent him off to the USA with their signing bonus, to get him an edjurmacatiern at a school designed specifically for his kind. The band would wait.

1ST PERSON SAMPLE: [Video]

[Shin comes in to view in his dorm room, which is frankly a mess. There are punk accessories and pieces of music notepaper strewn everywhere. He's talking on his cell phone, pacing.]

Yeah, I called Yasu but he just mumbled something about drivers and told me to call tech support and they're not open right now and these tutorials I googled are sooo complicated and...[He notices the screen and scrambles up to it with a big smile.] Looks like it just started working. I'll call you back when i'm done with this, thanks, bye! [He snaps the phone closed.] Yo! I just wanted to say, we're playing The Grog and Tankard, Friday night, as the opener for These Incredible Machines. Reply and i'll put your name on the list. It'd be cool if I saw you all there!
