[1: Everybody knows that smoking ain't allowed in school]

Shin's found that perfect little spot to sneak off and smoke. A little alcove, tucked away out of visual range of almost everyone, it's always shaded but looks out on the grounds so you can watch the mutants playing in the sunlight. He lights up, inhales. The smoke floods his lungs, dark, fruity and sweet and on comes the swimminess of nicotine. He looks down at the lighter, still flaming a few seconds. He sees Reira in the flames, flickering, as bright as the sun that's baking the ground three feet away.

Dwelling on these kinds of things is not cool, so he snaps it shut. That's when he notices he's not alone. "Hey." He says around his cherry black stone.

[2: A veritable smorgasboard, orgasboard, after the crowds have gone]

Somewhere in the wee hours, you end up getting pancakes. It's surprisingly busy at the diner for this amount of time and tired and hungry from playing (as part of the opening act) and dancing (to the headliners, though whether you consider pogoing and moshing "dancing" is your personal preference), Shin's stomach growls. He gives the waitress the most pitiful look while she brings you their water and mysteriously your pancakes arrive much sooner than you'd think.

His eyes widen, even larger than they already were. "Whoa, so many..." He snatches one and immediately begins drowning it in butter and syrup.

[3: I wanna rock!]

Your roomie seems to have never developed a sense of when normal people sleep. Right now he's set his mini amp up and his long, black and white fender. Slender fingers dance over it, causing notes to roll out, thumping thumping like balls dropped through a chute. You might or might not recognize Rose.

CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Shinichi Okazaki
CANON: NANA
CANON REFERENCE: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Manga/Nana
AGE: 16
GENDER: M
YEAR IN SCHOOL/FACULTY POSITION: 2

APPEARANCE: http://images.wikia.com/nanamanga/images/2/23/Shinichi.jpg
PERSONALITY: Shin is a very easygoing, friendly boy. Drifting from place to place and person to person, he's at home in chaotic circumstances.

There's something about him that makes him seem a little lost. It tends to set off maternal instincts (no doubt this is one of the things his clients find appealing about him). This isn't entirely a wrong impression. Unlike most teenagers, who affect a kindof above-it-all coolness, Shin really has seen a lot and really is rather jaded. On the other hand, he has moments of childishness, such as literally jumping for joy if you buy him sushi. He can also be remarkably lazy about things he isn't passionate about (that being almost everything that's not punk, music, sushi or Reira).

To those who know Shin well, he's a complete brat. He borrows without asking, eats your food and passes out on your couch after mercilessly beating you at majong. And he knows he can get away with it because he's cute. To those who don't know him, he's a charming, honest boy. It's not that he's intentionally trying to deceive strangers. He's just developed a sophisticated, semi-conscious mental calculus of how much he can get away with with his friends. Yet being his friend's not all bad. He's a loyal personality and will stick up for the people he's close to no matter what (for instance when he throws a drink in the face of a member of one of his favorite bands for hurting Hachi).

Shin's tomcat ways make him wary of romantic relationships. He's had clients profess love for him before, something he finds both embarrassing and uncomfortable, seeing as he can't return their feelings. It's not that he's incapable of them (as Reira in the series shows) but he will take some convincing, like a stray cat you gradually coax into your house. On the other hand, he ends up counseling his friends on their own relationship troubles quite a bit. Despite how bubbly and attention-seeking he is, he's also a good listener.

Ryoko's "education" has given him weird, skewed ideas about sex. Put simply, he's a bit of a gold digger he ain't messing with no broke OL. He has difficulty separating the process of gaining something from sex, mainly because noone has taught him any better. Although he's quite good at it, he views it as something rather mundane. He won't do it for free with someone unless business has been unusually slow or he feels a real connection to them. These psychosexual hangups are not, however, unfixable. With a caring lover or a good therapist, he may mature.

He's passionate about music, with a tendency to fanboy over bands he likes. It is for this reason that he feels a connection to England, birthplace of punk, above and beyond it being his childhood home.

Shin's politics tend towards the kind of lazy, undeveloped anarchism common in much punk rock. He really has no idea about the term's political origins, knowing only that there is The System and it is a Bad Thing and in general to be rebellious. No doubt this will leave him vulnerable to the Brotherhood Of Mutants' propagandizing.

In fact, his education has been woefully deficient period, and only Yasu's forcing him to cram allowed him to succesfully fake being a real sophomore. He's also uneducated about many quintessentially Japanese things. For instance he doesn't know what one does on Tanabata or how to use chopsticks.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Shin has the ability to generate, manipulate and hear sounds at very low frequencies, from the lower end of conventional human hearing on downward. These sounds can be transmitted several miles (in the manner of elephants), used to disrupt delicate equipment, or make subconscious suggestions in the ears of others.

AU HISTORY: Shin was born in England, to a Japanese father and a Swedish mother. The youngest of several boys, his mother died in childbirth, a fact for which the rest of the family has never forgiven him. He didn't experience much warmth growing up, probably the reason for his searching after affection as a teenage. Despite that, he never became a sullen and withdrawn child, always striving his best to make friends. This was part good nature and part survival strategy: if his family hated him, it was only logical to find people he could rely on elsewhere. At age eleven, his powers began to manifest, though it took some time for anyone to realize it as everyone thought they were simply a particularly elusive nearby high powered sound system.

Shin was promptly disowned. His father was a respectable businessman and having a mutant for a son was not on. He did not like the idea of being a ward of the state. Fortunately he still had one option: Preteen Shin sought refuge with a family friend, a flight attendant named Ryoko. She gave him a generalized education in punk rock and (presumably after he matured a bit) "bad things". His opportunities in England where limited though. When he was judged ready, she shipped him off to Japan, to make his fortune there (she'd accumulated a small fortune in frequent flyer miles over the course of her career).

At fifteen, Shin found himself in Tokyo, bumming around and staying with his string of girlfriends. He knew he wanted to make it big as a musician and become the first (publicly known) mutant rocker. When he saw a flyer for a punk band looking for auditions in the window an antique shop, he lept at the chance. Despite his youth, he impressed everyone at the audition (and caused Hachi's maternal instincts to go into overdrive) and became BLAST's new bassist. The lead singer, a spunky girl named Nana made him promise to become a better bass player than his idol, Ren Honjo. Not knowing that Ren was Nana's ex, he agreed enthusiastically. BLAST became his new surrogate family, even the prickly Nana O.

Playing a series of gigs around Tokyo, the band soon acquired the notice of Gaia records, who offered them a contract which, plied with sushi, Shin was the first to sign. He was looking forward to having a 'legit' way of making money instead of being a gigolo.

There was a problem though: legally, Gaia couldn't sign a juvenile delinquent mutant. The band was in a bind and Shin was considering quitting for everyone else's sake. Nana refused that idea, had Yasu give him a month long crash course in the most important school subjects he'd missed and sent him off to the USA with their signing bonus, to get him an edjurmacatiern at a school designed specifically for his kind. The band would wait.

1ST PERSON SAMPLE: [Video]

[Shin comes in to view in his dorm room, which is frankly a mess. There are punk accessories and pieces of music notepaper strewn everywhere. He's talking on his cell phone, pacing.]

Yeah, I called Yasu but he just mumbled something about drivers and told me to call tech support and they're not open right now and these tutorials I googled are sooo complicated and...[He notices the screen and scrambles up to it with a big smile.] Looks like it just started working. I'll call you back when i'm done with this, thanks, bye! [He snaps the phone closed.] Yo! I just wanted to say, we're playing The Grog and Tankard, Friday night, as the opener for These Incredible Machines. Reply and i'll put your name on the list. It'd be cool if I saw you all there!

From atop his rock, the traveler could see the wolves. What worried him most was how they were no longer leaping up at him, slobbering vises of teeth scissoring air. No, they were calmly waiting down there, panting, emitting the occasional whine. All the noises of the social management of a pack in audible form. A matrix of alphas, betas, omegas, played as a symphony for him in the desert night. He adjusted the frayed, wide brimmed hat he affected, though it was long since dark and there was no need to shade his eyes from the desert sun. He sat. He waited. He was beginning to feel the scraped sting of the bite on his calf. If he lived through the night, he would have to clean it immediately. Time passed like this until he was numb with boredom and there was streaks of his calf-blood on the rock from all the changing of positions he did. 'Calf blood...' he thought. '...for I am a calf here. Meat in a thin, gelatinous shell. Disgusting.' He gave an affected shudder for an audience of none. To compare himself to such a creature, with its big, innocent, uncompounded eyes...A little macabre even for him. When the sun came up, he noticed one of the big wolves whining fiercely, like a pup. The others were baring teeth and growling at something that was not him. Something on the ground. The big alpha worried at its own left front paw. Whatever had caused this was below his range of vision, but he could make an educated guess. These wolves were newcomers to this place, by the standards of his kind. They'd rampaged in, claiming the space of apex predator. But the apex was an unstable place to be. And the ancestors of their assailants (for more wolves where whining now, snapping at the sand, worrying at their own paws) had come to this place when it was pristine. They had claimed the right of first arrival in the Devonian period. The stung wolves paced, growled, foamed at the mouth and eventually died, paws twitching convulsively as their nerves danced their final manic jigs. The rest panickedly left their big, bold superiors to their fates. The man lept down, wincing at his hurt calf but glad to be free of his tormentors. He knelt on his good leg, held his hand out to welcome and regard his saviors. One climbed up, knowing instinctively in the tiny ball of its brain what he was. Two foreclaws that waved like an effusively smokin Italian making a point. The hunched spring of four pairs of legs. Convulsively working mandibles. A body like a shield or a coffin. And that customary curved erection, that bent prick, that limb of potent killing agony and delight, the stinger. "Sister scorpion." He said to the big female with a grin and kissed her foreclaw. He did not truly believe that any of the creatures gathered around his feet understood his words (though perhaps they appreciated the gesture as he appreciated gestures himself). But there was an ancient kinship between their kinds. The phylum Arthropoda was constantly expanding and devouring itself, but shared a common disdain for those yipping upstart invertebrates. Proud and noble wolves, capricious and self absorbed primates, those were to be looked down on. They could not take the life of their largest representative. It was a matter of pride. He repeated his thanks to each, poured whiskey on the punctures in his calf and moved on. The ranchers he was to find for this feeding foray were somewhere near here. Perhaps he could pull a location from the stupid, hyperactive brain of one of the flies infesting that bloated donkey carcass...

COMPUTER APTITUDE: Fair. He can browse the web, run antivirus software and download apps for his iphone.
AU HISTORY: As NANA is set in modern day, mundane Tokyo, much of his history will not have to be altered at all. However i'd like to ask for permission to retcon some details if he receives castmates, to be more in line with their histories.

Shin was born in Sweden. He never knew his mother, since she committed suicide shortly after giving birth to him. He passed into the care of his father, a man who never loved him. When he was a toddler, the family moved to England. His father was cold to him, never showing the boy affection, and while they weren't all bad, his older siblings by a different mother never seemed to consider him one of them.

As a boy, he acted out in order to get the attention he craved, and although he would be perfunctorily slapped, spanked and/or sent to his room, it did not have the desired result. He discovered punk with the hope of taking that plan a step further, ripping up his clothes and piercing his own ears. That didn't work either, but in the subculture he found something he actually enjoyed and a diverse group that accepted him.

It was as a young, budding, still rather innocent punker that Shin met Ryoko Kawashigi, fellow overseas Japanese, new neighbor and flight attendant. The woman completely corrupted him, teaching him "bad things" and planting in him the idea of running away. Shin wasn't the first boy she'd done this to, but he was the only one she'd end up having a continuing, if distant, relationship with. Being a flight attendant, she kept lovers in several cities around the world, several of them being male prostitutes who made their money off of travelers like herself and tourists. Shin was her first protege though. This decision of hers was motivated both by the genuine desire to give him a skill he could make a living from and a perverse desire to see the last of his innocence soiled. Although Shin speaks of her in affectionate tones, her decision to introduce a fourteen year old to prostitution, no matter how mature for his age, speaks to psychological damage and/or Ephebophilia that is beyond the scope of this application. Shin, for his part, did not have the grounding in healthy relationships to understand the sickness of her actions.

With her help, he escaped to Japan. His father was completely uninterested in his disappearance and did not pursue the matter.

In Tokyo, he stayed with Ryoko for a couple months while he found a market for the musical talents he'd honed overseas, becoming acquianted with the punk scene there. Responding to a flyer, he tried out for a position in BLAST (BlackStones), an up and coming indie punk band that had impressed him shortly after he landed at Narita. His new career as a prostitute allowed him to buy a top of the line bass for his tryout and he was given the position of bassist, a position formerly held by Ren Honjou, a musician he much admired and secretly the ex boyfriend of BLAST's lead singer. Within a few short months BLAST's fame had grown despite their indie status. Gaia Records approached the band with an offer of a contract, and all leaped at the chance, Shin especially. His career had caused some minor friction in the band, with the other three members all expressing mild discomfort with it, Nana out of concern for the band's reputation if anyone found out (at least that's what she says, anyway), Yasu out of big brotherly concern and Nobu simply because despite his piercings and dyed hair, he's still a very sheltered boy. Shin managed to keep it under wraps, even when the lonely vocalist of Trapnest became one of his clients.

However there was one catch: Gaia wouldn't sign a boy who hadn't yet graduated high school. Disappointed, Shin was ready to quit the band to enable them to get their big break. However Nana Osaki, ever the fierce oneesan, practically dragged him onto a plane and told him that the band would wait for him, with the agreement of the other two members.

Touched (and terrified) by her loyalty and force of will, Shin found himself at Reims, determined to prove that friendship not misplaced.

SAMPLES
INTRANET/1ST PERSON SAMPLE: Hello everyone. I've got some good news. BLAST will be playing our first overseas date at L'Contre-Amaril, right here on Reims island.

The date's Friday night, starting at eight. Watch us friggin' blow everyone away!

[Private to band members]

Alright, hope you're all as pumped for this as I am. Except you, Renne. You seemed kinda nervous at today's practice. You really ought to relax more. I've got some stuff that can help you with that if you want.
